With winter slowly creeping in senior citizens at Douglas Murray Home for the Aged in Retreat have nothing to worry about thanks to Women Taking Action in partnership with the Department of Correctional Services.

For the past 40 years the home has been helping care for the frail and elderly residents at the home. They depend on donations. Women Taking Action and the Department of Correctional Services came together to give the residents of the home blankets, pillows, wheelchairs and toiletries on Sunday afternoon.

Keith Snyman, chairperson of the residents’ committee, says the donation will go a very long way.

“Douglas Murray has been going through very trying times financially. When we have guests like this who entertain and give us something to eat really warms up our hearts. Some of the people here don’t even get visitors so to have other people from outside is truly a blessing. It was a joyful afternoon for everyone.”

Snyman adds that the blankets will come in handy. “Winter is almost here and we have no doubt that these blankets will really help us. From the look of things it seems it’s going to be a very cold winter but now we have nothing to worry about. We really appreciate the blankets.”

Stacey Delport, from Women Taking Action, says they saw an opportunity to make a difference in other people’s lives. “We have been going out in communities and see what we can do. There is so much need across the country so we decided to also help closer to home by blankets and toiletries. Our aim is to touch more lives and do a our bit in making other’s people’s lives better.”
