A new guide dog partnership has been roaming the streets for the past six weeks.

Hylton Brander from Woodlands recently qualified after training with his guide dog named Zumba – a two-year-old male yellow Labrador, who is his first guide dog.

All applicants and dogs are carefully matched to suit each other’s needs by the SA Guide-Dogs Association for the Blind (GDA).

Training of the guide dog and recipient is first done at the association’s residential training centres for two weeks, followed by extra training in the guide dog owner’s home and work environment.

Brander is married with a son, and enjoys goal ball – a very popular sport for people with a visual impairment.

Zumba was raised in Cape Town and trained by the Western Cape branch of the GDA.

If you encounter Brander and Zumba on their daily routes you are urged not to distract, call, pet or feed Zumba.
