Man hijacked in Steenberg

2017-06-20 06:01

Steenberg police are requesting the public to help them investigate a hijacking in Steenberg on the afternoon of Monday 15 May.

Steenberg police spokesperson Warrant Officer John Bartlett says at about 13:45 the victim was driving his company car, a white Kia K2700, in Military Road.

“He was allegedly on his way to his workplace and when he stopped at the red traffic light he was approached by two man who asked him for his business card. One opened the door and spoke to his friend who had a black firearm in his hands. They pointed the firearm at him, got into the car and instructed him to drive through Lavender Hill and then in the direction of Muizenberg.”

Bartlett says the victim was allegedly forced to sit on the floor of the car while the hijacker pointed the gun at him.

“They drove to Swartklip Road, Khayelitsha when the victim got out of the car and ran in the direction of the beach. As he was running he heard two gunshots going off behind him and he hid in the bushes.

“After a while he came out and walked in the direction of Mitchell’s Plain and got a lift.

“Steenberg police have opened a case of hijacking and the thieves are still at large. The car has not yet been retrieved,” says Bartlett.

In a separate incident, a 14-year-old was rushed to the hospital after he was caught in gang crossfire in Ashley Crescent, Lavender Hill.

Bartlett says the teen was apparently at a shop when he was shot.

“The victim sustained a gunshot wound to his left leg. He was transported to Victoria Hospital for medical treatment. No arrests have been made as yet and Steenberg police have registered a case of attempted murder,” says Bartlett.
