Police are investigating a case of culpable homicide after a man was killed following an accident in Paradise Road in Claremont early on Sunday morning.

Western Cape Police spokesperson Captain Fredrik Van Wyk confirmed the incident, that happened at 03:00 on Sunday, was under investigation.

“A taxi believed to have been transporting matric pupils from a dance overturned on the M3 near Paradise Road,” he says.

“Shortly after it happened ER24, Life Healthcare, Metro, Fire and Rescue as well as other services attended to the incident.

“Upon arrival they found the taxi on its roof with passengers scattered across the scene. Sadly upon assessment of one of them, an 18-year-old man, found on the road, it was found that he sustained fatal injuries and died.”

Eleven of the people in the taxi sustained injuries ranging from moderate to critical.

One of the patients attended to by ER24 paramedics was a man believed to be in his 30s who was in a critical condition.

He was treated and transported to Groote Schuur Hospital. Four other patients were also transported to Victoria Hospital. The rest of the patients were transported to hospital by other services.

“Circumstances surrounding this incident are still under investigation,” concludes Van Wyk.

Jessica Shelver, spokesperson for education MEC Debbie Schäfer, has confirmed that said the deceased was a former pupil of Khayamandi High School in Stellenbosch and that the taxi was hired to attend a birthday party in Claremont.
