There was simply no stopping a well-drilled Milano United side at the Ikamva sport complex in Parow this weekend. The team was crowned worthy champions of the Strandfontein AFC u.13 “By the Sea” tournament.

Milano, which is in the Mitchell’s Plain Local Football Association and has won the u.12 league (first round, second round), grand challenge, knockout and a Safa Cape Town competition, had all the credentials of a championship side in the making under coach Basil “Puzzy” Jansen.

Therefore it was no surprise when Milano captured the championship trophy after its superb 1-0 win over an equally radiant Ulana Academy in an exciting final.

Jansen, who celebrates his 80th birthday this year, was chosen as the Coach of the Tournament. He was very modest about his team’s win and acknowledged that with 75% of last year’s squad setting the base for the team’s success, “the new guys coming in adapted well”.

“We were up against it in the quarters against Old Mutual and Fish Hoek in the semis, but did enough. With our very organised play and dedication I think on all fronts we were a shade better in reaping the rewards,” Jansen says.

Two of Milano’s players were kingpins of the tournament. Goalkeeper Dwane Blaauw was most certainly the player of the match in the final and central defender Masood Davids scored the match-winning goal against Fish Hoek in their 1-0 semifinal win.

Blaauw did receive recognition by winning the award as Best Goalkeeper of the Tournament, while his teammate midfielder Shauib Martin was chosen as Player of the Tournament.

Ulana Academy attacked from all directions and peppered Blaauw at every opportunity, but the goalie was well-positioned and dealt with the crosses and firing shots – and free kicks in particular by Nr. 7 shirt Yiva Ulana.

Meanwhile, Standards United whipped Liverpool-Portland 6-0 in an all Mitchell’s Plain final to lift the shield trophy.

Top goal scorer of the tournament Caleb Bailey (7) scored a hat trick, while Donelle Jackson, Jay-Lee Luiters and Tyrees Fortuin each added their name to the score sheet.

FN Rangers carved their name on the plate trophy after beating their Cape Town Tygerberg LFA neighbour Avendale Athletico 3-2 in another entertaining final.

Leo Forbes, Jermaine Gidlon and Achmad Allie each found the target for FN Rangers while Asisipho Gqadushe and Lathitha Tsoenyane replied for Avendale.

The two-day tournament did entertain spectators, although it did not draw a much bigger crowd than at the Strandfontein sports fields.

The most sought-after u.13 tournament brought a surplus of good players like Davids, Blaauw and Connor Jales of Milano, Michaél Paulse of the Mitchell’s Plain Centre of Excellence, Clinton Adams of Bayview, Kyle Bailey of Fish Hoek, Tylo Sanger of FN Rangers, Zairon van Wyk of Ulana Academy, Luke Matthews of Ajax Cape Town, Egon Jansen of Maties and Adam Oliver of Avendale.
