The Mitchells Plain Netball Union (MPNU) celebrated their 40th anniversary as a Netball Union.

They commemorated the momentous occasion by having their season opening day at the Stephen Reagan Sports complex in Westridge on Saturday. The day was attended by the Cape Metropole Netball Federation as well as a local brass band which added to the festivities of the day.

To add to the momentous achievement, the MPNU has been handed the opportunity to partake in a tour to Durban where they will sending four teams to showcase their up and coming stars that will represent them in a tournament taking place in July.

“The day was a hive of activity as girls were excited to play their first games of the season and players and spectators were entertained by a live brass band and DJ,” said Pamela Johnson, chairperson of the MPNU.

She said that the day’s event was enjoyed by everyone and that the first day of the season was a success with no hiccups. She would like to thank the executive committee of MPNU as well as all the clubs and affiliates for the all the support.

She also welcomed three new clubs to the union, namely Woodlands Netball Club, Old Mutual Netball Club and Project Playground Netball Club to this year’s season.

The first game of the Mitchell’s Plain Netball Union season took place at the Stephen Reagan Sports complex in Westridge which was contested between the u.9 girls of Goldhill Netball Club (in yellow bibs) and Weltevrede Netball Club. Weltevrede walked away as winners of this particular contest.
