Neighbourhood watch attacked

2016-05-24 06:00

Police are investigating the shooting of a 19-year-old man on Sunday 22 May.

It is alleged that a group of Surrey Estate Neighbourhood Watch members responded to a complaint on Jakes Gerwel Drive opposite Athlone’s industrial area.

A woman and a friend were held at gun point and robbed of R500. She reported it to the Surrey Estate Neighbourhood Watch and as a result the group responded and found the suspect within the immediate vicinity.

According to Manenberg police spokesperson, Lieutenant Ian Bennett, the suspect fired several shots at the group as he was being approached, hitting the 19-year-old victim in the back and side. The victim was taken to hospital while the suspect fled on foot.

Bennett states that it is still unclear if the victim is part of a neighbourhood watch or not.

“This is a huge concern for the station commander Colonel Henry Hugo. He wants to commend all the neighbourhood watches in the Manenberg precinct. In the same breath he also warns them not to confront criminals with firearms. They need to alert the police to what they have encountered. A young life could have been lost. He realises at times neighbourhood watch covers a lot more area than the police, but they should not put themselves at risk of being seriously injured,” states Bennett.

A case of attempted murder has been opened for investigation.

V Anyone with information regarding this incident is urged to contact Manenberg police on 021 699 9400 or CrimeStop 0860 010 111.
