Neighbourhood watch response leads to four arrests

2016-05-24 06:00

Four men were arrested on Tuesday 17 May after they robbed a man in Racecourse Road, Kenwyn.

Lansdowne police spokesperson Sergeant Nkululeko Mnyaka says the incident occurred at 13:30.

“The 30-year-old victim was approached from behind when one guy choked him and another was busy searching his pockets. Another suspect grabbed a chain from (the victim’s) neck and the victim fell,” Mnyaka says.

He says fortunately eye witnesses saw the incident and informed the neighbourhood watch through a social network.

Kenwyn Neighbourhood Watch responded swiftly and quickly to the scene.

“(They) called the Sector 2 manager Sergeant Esli Lucas who also rushed to the scene and found the victim who described the suspects and explained the direction they took after robbing him,” Mnyaka explains.

The officer and neighbourhood watch members gave chase and managed to nab all four suspects in Imam Haron Road.

A Nokia cellphone and silver chain were recovered and returned to the complainant.

All four men, aged between 18 and 26, were detained at Lansdowne police station.

They were charged with robbery.
