No tenders for Granger Bay site

2017-06-20 06:01

A new tender process for the long-term lease of the City of Cape Town’s Granger Bay Boulevard site next to the Cape Town Stadium will have to be initiated.

This after not a single tender was received for the property when the initial tender process was advertised between September last year and January.

Last year, business rights were granted for the Cape Town Stadium and the vacant gravel site on Granger Bay Boulevard was advertised for a long-term lease. The site is currently used for overflow parking.

It is expected that the development of this property will be a catalyst for the commercialisation of the stadium precinct which holds investment and job creation benefits, said deputy mayor Ian Neilson at the time of the tender process (“Tenders open for Granger Bay site”, People’s Post, 20 September 2016).

The construction value alone is estimated at around R600m. The City will keep ownership of the property and the development and management of the property will be done on the basis of a 25-year lease.

About 29 000m² of space will be allowed to be developed. A height restriction of eight storeys will apply. All future developments on the property would need to adhere to the zoning conditions, including infrastructure requirements.

Stuart Diamond, Mayco member for assets and facilities management, confirms no tenders were received and a new process to lease the property will have to be initiated.
