“It may be the end of the world, but if you have your towel for comfort it will all be OK.”

This is the inspiration for Towel Day, an annual celebration on 25 May, as a tribute to the late author Douglas Adams (1952 – 2001).

On that day, fans of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy around the universe carry a towel in his honour. And this year, Fish Hoek did their part too.

The only South Africans to officially honour the day, two dozen gathered at Fish Hoek beach for a photo – many of them early-morning swimmers who have created a great community spirit, facing many challenges and joys together, says event organiser Grant Webb.

“Traditionally, people just carry their towels around for the day. This one picture will celebrate Fish Hoek and its different people,” he says.

The Fish Hoek event even received recognition for the international organisers and Webb hopes it will grow into an annual event. “It’s some great fun for a small community. This will be done on an annual basis and I hope to grow it into a rather large gathering next year where we will challenge schools and businesses to also get involved,” he says.
