Not one against fire station

2017-08-08 06:02

It was with great concern that I read the article regarding the proposed fire station that has been planned for the old Solole reserve (“Flames fan over station”, People’s Post, 1 August).

For many years, residents of Kommetjie, Ocean View, Scarborough and Masiphumemele have had to wait for just a little too long for a fire engine to arrive from the Fish Hoek station. If you have attended the scene of a burning house or informal dwelling, you will know that minutes count – and these minutes save not just properties, but lives as well.

Over the five years that I sat on the ward 69 committee, not a month went by when I did not have requests from the public for a fire station to be built on the western side of the “four-way stop”.

When the news came out that the City of Cape Town would build a new fire station, all the communities were very happy, especially in Masiphumelele and Ocean View where people live in wooden structures.

I do not agree that there has been no public consultation. I have yet to find a single person living in Masiphumelele, Ocean View or Kommetjie who has opposed the building of this fire station because they are all going to benefit from it. In future when a fire breaks out in the Masiphumelele wetlands, a fire engine will take a minute to arrive on the scene as opposed to 10 minutes. How is this a bad thing?

I implore Mayco member JP Smith not to reconsider the placement of the proposed fire station. It will be an extremely valuable service to those of us living in the Far South.

I also ask that provincial government add another ambulance as well. We often have to wait up to two hours if the ambulance is in Muizenberg, and with the increase in shootings, this is too long.
