Investigating officers from the Steenberg Police Station are getting a pat on the back from their bosses for a job well done with cases they have been investigating.

Constable Mtutuzeli Christopher Willie was congratulated for his breakthrough in a murder case. On Friday 31 May 2013 at about 20:10 an officer from Steenberg police responded to a shooting incident at 11 11th Avenue, Retreat. There he found a 27-year-old man had died of a shot in his upper body.

Two suspects had fired shots at the deceased. On the same night, one of the suspects was arrested. The next day, the other alleged suspect was arrested. One of the suspects was positively identified by an eyewitness.

On Monday 7 March, one of the suspects was found guilty in the Wynberg Magistrate’s court. He was sentenced to 15 years direct imprisonment. The case against the second suspect was withdrawn as there was no prima facie evidence.

Constable Lungile Alex Mkhetshane has also been praised for a job well done.

On 29 June 2015 at about 17:20 a man was robbed while stopped by mechanical problems with his car on Prince George Drive, Retreat. Two suspects approached him while he was checking the engine. One of the suspects showed him a firearm that was under his T-shirt. While the suspect pointed the firearm at him, his accomplice took a money box containing cash of R1700 and a set of keys. The victim grabbed the firearm out of the suspect’s hand and struck him over the head. The firearm, found to an imitation, broke. The suspect was detained at the Steenberg Police Station for robbery.

On Wednesday 16 March the suspect was found guilty at the Wynberg Magistrate’s court on a charge of robbery with aggravating circumstances and he was sentenced to 14 years imprisonment.

Another police officer who was applauded for his good work was Sergeant Hlaole David Mmola.

On Tuesday 25 August 2015, members of the Cape Town National Intervention Unit searched a suspicious male in Walton Road, Cafda, Retreat. They found a Norinco pistol and nine hollow point rounds of ammunition in the possession of the suspect. The serial number of the firearm was filed off.

The 22-year-old suspect was arrested and charged with possession of firearm without a license, illegal possession of ammunition and possession of a prohibited firearm. The accused is a member of the Junky Funky Kids gang. On Tuesday 1 March the accused was found guilty and sentenced to six years imprisonment. Half of the sentence is suspended for a period of five years on condition that the accused is not convicted of contravention of the firearms act. The accused s also declared unfit to possess a firearm.

Colonel Jan Alexander, Steenberg station commander, says that the police will continue to clamp down on crime and perpetrators.

“We applaud the officers for their sterling and successful investigation. We will maintain a zero tolerance approach in combating and investigation of crime. We also want to thank the community for their support.”
