A local early development centre is graduating to bigger and better heights, adding a third location to its stable.

The 3 Bears educare officially opened its third centre last week and occupation started yesterday.

On Friday special invitees attended the ribbon-cutting ceremony of the 3 Bears Education and Training Academy in Portlands.

Colleen Isaacs, one of the owners, says the new centre will house the educare’s pre-Grade R classes in three classrooms at the facility on the corner of Washington Way and Hazeldene Avenue.

The building is also situated across from its second location. The first 3 Bears centre is in Silversands Way.

In addition to the classrooms, the new venue also features a hall that will be used by the educare but also be hired out to the community.

“The reason why we built this facility is because we always have to hire halls when we have graduation and activities, and then we need to cart all our things around. So we decided: why not build our own hall? Now we can just bring our kids across the road and they can practise, we can have fun days, we can do everything in our own building,” she says.

The facility will also play a further role in uplifting the community, says Isaacs.

“We will host parental workshops and training because many parents ask what they can do with their children after educare instead of them sitting with a laptop or a cellphone,” she says.

“We have a venue so we will set up workshops for existing parents so that they can equip themselves before their children leave 3 Bears.”

The project took five months to complete.

Building started in November last year and was completed in April.

“We saw the land go up for tender and we did enquiries and then put in a tender to purchase the land. Once the tender was approved, we started the project,” says Isaacs.

“It is a community hall and people are already doing inquiries about how they can book the hall, but our main priority is upskilling the community, upskilling unemployed moms and grandmothers, whoever it is that wants to learn about early childhood development.”
