Monique Koning from Wynberg says her paintings carry a message of hope for a better tomorrow.

The mother of three feels like she has been to hell and back but has found strength and hope in her paintings – and shows this in her art.

Having studied painting at school she matriculated with 98% in Art. However, thereafter she didn’t pay much attention to it but only painted occasionally.

“My ambition in life is personal success and achievement and to inspire others. At the age of 17, I discovered my gift and talent. Every time I became desperate I found release in my art,” says Monique, who paints with oils.

After her divorce in 2010 she says she found herself faced with the challenge of supporting her children. Yet the only thing she ever knew was to be a mother and a wife.

“I worked different jobs but all that was not fulfilling and the money was not enough.”

She had grown up in Port Elizabeth and decided she needed a change of space and to refocus her life and moved to Cape Town.

“I was crying all the time. Nothing was working. Until one day someone asked me what I’m really good at. I told her: ‘Painting,’ and she told me I must do that. I decided to go back to doing what I loved to do and through divine intervention discovered this was meant to be.”

“I went back to art. Somehow it gave me this fulfilment and I knew this will be my saving grace. Though it wasn’t giving me so much money, I was able to do something that I love. It gives me hope and I want to share that hope with others.”

Koning turned her lounge into a studio.

“My children always knew I could do this. They believed and trusted me so much. One day they came back from school and found that I had turned our lounge into an art studio; they were fine with it. That is now my happy space.

“It hasn’t been an easy journey but it serves as a reminder to all of us that if we believe in the talent and loving what you do you can always make it work.”

When she is not commissioned to paint she loves painting flowers and women.

“My life has been a sad story but when I paint I give the message of hope. When I’m down, sad and broken I paint about happiness, love, joy and laughter. This is reflected in the bold colours I use.

“And most of my paintings with women: they are looking down. This is the story of my life. It has been tough but I hold on. I know that one day it will work.”
