LETTER: Passion for public work

2016-03-08 06:00

Complaints in the new South Africa have became a plague, especially in the state departments where all, whether they like it or not, are public servants. These or rather all public servants have the sole mandate to serve Jan Alleman, no matter what status in society. I am also one of these that will complain if I see or am told that a public servant has failed Jan Alleman, but I am also conscious of the fact that praise is due where it is necessary.

I have noticed that Simon Daniels, a senior foreman at the Wynberg solid waste depot off Rosmead Avenue, is an example of service delivery.

He will take up a broom and sweep where dumpers have messed. I have seen him help people offload their waste and he is just all over the place, assisting where he can.

On Tuesday 1 March I was at the dump and at the gate was Daniels with the security checking the cars. Soon after that he was at the bins busy assisting the public and his staff. I commented that he was always so busy for a senior foreman and he responded that he was thankful to God for his job and he had a passion for his work. I could not help but to respond that one could see it.

As I drove away I thought to myself: if this man can only give a lecture onsite to other public servants on the passion for one’s work and the meaning of service delivery, we will have no complaints, only compliments.
