Bicycle patrols will now be a more frequent sight in the Grassy Park policing precinct as police have set out to pedal their way to curb crime.

Bike patrols in the area kicked off two weeks ago in an effort to increase police visibility in the area.

Grassy Park police station commander Colonel Shawn van Wyk says the patrols were initiated so the police may be more accessible to the public as well.

“We have a few bicycles in the area operating and we have sectors alternating these bike patrols. We are using this initiative to fill the gap of our limited resources,” he says.

Van Wyk adds bicycles that were distributed to neighbourhood watches in the area are also currently being used by police officers.

Philip Bam, chairperson of the Community Police Forum, says they are happy to see more is being done to increase police visibility.

“However, we will still call on the authorities to make more resources available in our area. We want more resources because what we currently have in our area is not sufficient for the reality of our crime situation in the Grassy Park area,” Bam says.
