Police in Manenberg arrested two men, both for the illegal possession of firearms and ammunition, on Monday.

According to Manenberg police spokesperson, Captain Ian Bennett, a 22-year-old man was arrested by police officers attached to Operation Combat Unit.

The unit has been deployed in the Manenberg area to combat gangs, explains Bennett.

Officers were busy with high-density patrols and were alerted to information at 16:50.

“While patrolling the immediate vicinity of Ondine Court they saw the 22-year-old man standing in the road. When he saw the police, he started to run.

“The police officers then cornered him and on searching him they found him clutching a .38 revolver.

“The firearm was confiscated and will be sent to ballistics for testing,” says Bennett.

A second man (20) was arrested later that same day when officers of Manenberg police’s Crime Prevention Unit tasked with stop-and-searches and crime prevention were busy with high-density patrols in Lataba Road after fresh gang violence in the area.

Bennett confirms that the officers saw a man standing in the road.

“When they approached him, he started to run and they managed to corner him.

“They found a 9mm pistol with 12 live rounds of ammunition. The pistol will be sent for ballistic testing,” he says.

Both suspects will be appearing in the Athlone Magistrate’s Court soon.

Anyone with information leading to the successful arrest and confiscation of firearms and ammunition will be financially rewarded, Bennett adds.
