Play at acting

If you’ve ever dreamed of being the next big film star, a new tourism offering is just for you.

Tourists now have the opportunity to find out what goes into a day in the life of an actor through a new experience on offer in Muizenberg.

“Be an Actor for a Day” takes you through a drama dream day in Muizenberg with Coleen van Staden, who has been treading the boards as actor, producer and director for over 30 years.

Participants can enjoy a class full of voice projection and stagecraft lessons before experiencing an audition and even staging a short play.

Van Staden says the concept was “quite simply [inspired by a] love of theatre [and] passion for Cape Town, but especially my neighbourhood, Muizenberg”.

What makes the experience special is “being able to combine over 30 years of experience in community theatre and sharing that with others while having a fun day out with locals”, says Van Staden.

She runs the experience with her “theatre bestie”, Celia Musikanth.

Since creating the offer in May, the experience has already had over two dozen local participants.

Van Staden believes it adds a “unique product to the tourism basket”.

“It encourages visitors to engage with neighbourhoods and their locals in an activity they may never have considered doing back home. Travel inspires adventure,” she says.

The experience includes local gems like the Masque Theatre and Palmer Road, Muizenberg Village. The participants take part in exercises, auditions, stagecraft and rehearsals, before putting on a performance and having a Q&A session with a theatre professional.V For more information contact Coleen van Staden on 072 120 5645 or coleenvanstaden@gmail.com.
