Plumstead walk welcomed

2016-04-26 06:00

Plumstead Neighbourhood Watch (NHW) and community members took to the streets for a two-hour walk recently to show their visibility and that they have zero tolerance toward crime in their community.

The walk, which took place on Sunday 17 April, was attended by around100 people.

Those who couldn’t walk assisted with the mobile patrols.

The organisers of the walk said they were happy that it was received with open hands by the community at large. The walk was planned by the community of Plumstead as well as Plumstead NHW.

Jacqui Martch, a member of the neighbourhood watch and the walk organiser, says the community really liked the idea of the walk. “We walked through the streets, escorted by the police, mobile neighbourhood watch patrols and the security company staff. There was an amazing team spirit. The community and neighbourhood watch members divided into two groups and covered the greater Plumstead area. We have a very active neighbourhood watch, comprising of walking and mobile patrols. We work closely with the police and combat forces and often assist with special operations which are carried out. This was just to remind people that we are out there,” she says.

Martch says as a neighbourhood watch they are winning the war against crime, however there are some parts of the community that still need to be looked at closely. Crime seems to depend on which part of Plumstead people reside in. Certain roads have more incidents as they are closer to the exits.

“We also focus on the problem areas so that we create a safer neighbourhood for everyone.”

They will also be planning future walks in various areas of Plumstead and they believe neighbourhood watches are import as they are the eyes and ears of the police.
