Police vow to beat crime

A 21-year-old man from Lavender Hill was arrested for illegal possession of an imitation firearm and possession of ammunition on Tuesday 6 August.

Steenberg police spokesperson warrant officer John Bartlett says police officers were carrying out crime prevention patrols at Fawley Court, Lavender Hill, when they saw an unknown man walking with a bag. “The officers stopped and searched him and found in his possession an imitation firearm with one rifle round in the chamber,” he says.

He was arrested on the spot and he will appear at the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court soon.

The national crime statistics for the financial year, from April 2015 to March 2016, were released on Friday 2 September. The statistics show that illegal possession of firearms and ammunition sharply increased in the Steenberg precinct. A total of 114 cases were reported compared to 73 the previous year. This is a 56.2% increase.

However, Steenberg police have vowed to continue with their zero tolerance against crime.

“We will not tolerate crime in this area. Members of the community are requested to continue to give information with regard to illegal activities,” adds Bartlett.

V Anyone who has information on the incident is requested to contact Steenberg police at 021 702 9000 or Crime Stop at 08600 10111.
