The road to fame has started in all earnest for the two high school sides of Portland and Tafelsig.

After two assignments, Portland and Tafelsig are unbeaten and share the top of the log standings with six points apiece in the MRP Foundation High Schools Soccer League – Mitchell’s Plain.

Tafelsig High, the 2014 former league champions and Mondale High, the league holders of the 2012 and 2013 championships, came head-to-head in a tense game that produced some thrilling end-to end entertaining football.

Andrew Geldenhuys’ Tafelsig schoolboy side by virtue of Mickyle Smith’s first half strike was enough to sink Mondale High 1-0 at a very noisy MRP sports complex in Westridge on Saturday. Mondale’s potent firing engine in the form of Riyaaz Nell, Ethan Stellenboom and Jemaaeel Ockers constantly raided the opposition’s goal area – only to be stopped in their tracks by Tafelsig High’s deadly defensive markings in which particularly central defender Yahiya Wilson and goalie Clayton du Plessis played a pivotal role.

Portland conquer over luckless Westridge

Portland High was over the last four seasons among the top-eight finishers and if they apply themselves and are serious about their intentions they may finally enter the winner’s enclosure.

Meanwhile the victorious side beat a luckless Westridge High side 3-1 after having held a slender 1-0 advantage lead at the break through a well taken goal by Leo McCleod.

They added two more goals in the second stanza through Tashreeq Morris and Masnoon Finch while Bevan Johannes replied for Westridge.

Spine Road High on the victory march

Finally Spine Road High have hit the right notes to record a resounding 1-0 victory and send the ego of Glendale High reeling.

However, spare a thought for Anbeuto Samuels (goalkeeper), Keegan Petersen and Keegan Booysen who were outstanding in the Glendale side but could not reap the fruits of success.

In the end it was primarily the decisive match-winning effort from Tapey Fredericks that secured the 1-0 result and his sides first three points after losing 2-0 to Cedar High the previous week.

Other results:

Beacon Hill High 1, Rocklands High 1; Cloetesville High 1, Cedar High 0; Woodlands High 0; Lentegeur High 0; Princeton High 1, Strandfontein High 0; Oval North High 1, Aloe High 1.
