Praying for peace

In response to the escalating violence in the Cape Flats, New Hope Church started Operation Firewall. This is a prayer initiative that happens quarterly. Church members go out in the streets armed with placards and in prayer and call on the community to join this silent prayer.

New Hope Church SA (NHC SA) in Steenberg has an open “door policy” and everyone is welcome. Senior pastors Jose and Desray van Rensburg have huge hearts for the people and serve passionately. The church recently celebrated 15 years since its establishment and have been in the Retreat/Steenberg community for the past five years. Their church is situated in an area that is terrorised by violence; gangsterism and other social ills, but they are doing their part in turning that around.

“The vision is to provide a platform for people to dream and imagine again. We are God’s hands and feet, and therefore, we meet people at their point of need and we are open seven days a week. Many regard our church as a revolving door,” says Johnlyn van Reenen, elder at the church.

Van Reenen says they are using different projects to work and better the community. “By means of various projects, we are strategically positioned as a city on a hill and we are here for the community. We have a slogan that says: ‘We are here for those who are still to come’.”

NHC SA has a team of eight young adults who serve high schools in their areas on a weekly basis and are re-establishing the centrality of God in the schools and encouraging youth in high schools to be active and responsible citizens. “Periodically, a prayer walk, known as Operation Firewall, takes place. Subsequently, we have established a gang and drug reformation project which takes a holistic approach to transforming these individuals. It has been such an amazing experience to see dignity restored to these lives and how their hearts are open again,” she says.

The church has a rich culture of performing arts and their Paradigm Dance Crew has been on Expresso Morning Show. “The motivation behind these projects stems from the fact that we want our communities to excel and to live beyond their struggles. We also provide tutoring lectures for high school learners every Saturday because we understand the challenge of effective learning in our high schools, which are over-populated and home environments which are often not conducive to learning. We are agents of change, called to serve our people. We want to change the perception that nothing good can come out of our communities.”
