Proper parking part of plan

A proposal to upgrade a section of parking area at the Kalk Bay harbour will be presented to residents at the end of the month.

The City of Cape Town’s transport and urban development department is proposing to formalise the existing parking area on the eastern side of the railway line and south of Kalk Bay harbour, known as “the Point”.

An area of 3600m² is to be resurfaced in the proposal. An area of 3100m², next to the parking, will be set aside as a recreational area and will be rehabilitated and upgraded, according to the proposal.

The City will hold a public meeting to talk to residents at Holy Trinity Church in Kalk Bay on Monday 29 May from 17:30 to 19:00.

Eddie Andrews, Mayco member (South), says: “The purpose of the meeting is to get comments from the community regarding the rehabilitation of the parking area. The parking area is currently not surfaced and does not have a structured layout.”

Funding for the project can only be sought when the estimated costs are known, says Andrews.

“The City cannot ascertain the estimated costs until the proposals have been agreed to. The City has not yet established a start date for the rehabilitation. This will be clearer after the proposals have been discussed and agreed to.”

Tony Trimmel, chairperson of the Kalk Bay and St James Ratepayers’ Association, says the organisation has been presented with some plans, which look as though the proposal will reduce congestion at the harbour entrance and will be completed as part of the current Main Road rehabilitation project.

However, Trimmel declined to comment extensively, saying he would rather wait until after the public had seen the proposals.

“It won’t alleviate all the congestion and parking problems in Kalk Bay, but it will add value to the area,” he says.
