Police in the Grassy Park precinct are on high alert after recent house break-ins and robberies in the past week.

Grassy Park station commander Colonel Shawn van Wyk has urged parents especially to be very vigilant after a case of kidnapping and robbery was reported.

Grassy Park police spokesperson says on Friday 8 April at about 13:10 police were informed of a house robbery with a kidnapping that occurred in Lotus River.

“The underage complainant says the suspect jumped out of a blue vehicle, took the house key and knew personal details of the complainant’s mother. The suspect took valuable items inside the house and took the minor and drove off with him.”

She adds the suspects drove with the minor to a different home and at this house there was also a minor at home and they stole a TV from the second residence. “The child was then told to go to Caltex garage where he had to meet someone in a white vehicle who had to hand him something which he had to return to the suspect. The child then ran to his friend’s house.”

A similar incident occurred in Steenberg at about 15:10 on the same day. “The same modus operandi and vehicle were used . Two minor boys were kidnapped and a laptop was taken.”

Kleinsmith says according to their aunt, she was approached by the suspect to buy perfume. “The suspect then told the victims to go with him to the truck to fetch more perfume. The boys were later dropped off unharmed,” she says.

Kleinsmith says the suspects are two men aged between 34 and 40.

Van Wyk says: “It is very important for our parents to be aware of this as well in order for them to warn their children constantly about safety measures and not to reveal personal information to strangers.”

In a separate incident on Thursday, Kleinsmith confirms a house break-in and theft report was received at about 11:15.

“The complainant says that he was phoned by a witness who informed him that his house was broken into. On his arrival at his residence he discovered that the burglar gate as well as the door was forced open and valuables were stolen.”

The witness says that a white vehicle with an unknown registration pulled up in the complainants yard, loaded items and then left. There were three suspects in the vehicle. A docket of housebreaking and theft is being investigated.

On Thursday at about 09:25 sector managers of sector 3 in the Lotus River area received information of a truck that was being robbed in New Horizons. At Turnstone Road, officers met a 27-year truck driver who delivers bread. “The truck driver finished delivering the bread when four men forced tried to open the truck door but it was locked. They then broke the window. The vistim and one of the suspects were struggling when another suspect stabbed him in the head and robbed him of cash and three cell phones,” Kleinsmith says.

A case of aggravated robbery was opened at the station. Three of the suspects were arrested and all of the cellphones as well as part of the money was recovered.

The fourth suspect is still at large.
