A Lotus River man (41) man faces a charge of illegal possession of a rhino horn after a rhino horn was found in his 2nd Avenue home last week.

Grassy Park police spokesperson Warrant Officer Wynita Kleinsmith says Hawks member Colonel JJ Strydom, along with Grassy Park crime intelligence officers, Captain Ashley Petersen and members under his command followed up on a tip-off on Tuesday last week.

“Upon searching the premises, a rhino horn was found in a cupboard, wrapped in blue plastic.

“Two cellphones of the suspect, as well as the rhino horn were handed in at the Grassy Park police station,” Kleinsmith says.

After valuation by Cape Nature members, the horn was said to be valued at R200 000.

The suspect was arrested in terms of Cape Nature Ordinance 19 of 1974.

He was set to appear in the Wynberg Magistrates’ Court on Thursday last week.

Police station commander Shawn van Wyk says police will continue clamping down on crime and criminals.

“Police will maintain their zero-tolerance approach in the combatting and investigation of crime. Strengthening the partnership between the community and the police is high on the agenda as it is contributing to reducing crime and the apprehension of criminals,” he says.
