The final touches on the Nantes Centre of Excellence are being put in place ahead of its scheduled unveiling at the end of July.

The initial cost of the outlay of the project was in the region of R3m, with total cost expected to be R7.8m upon completion as reported in People’s Post (“R2.8m to kickstart ECD centre”, 22 September 2015; “Get involved in ECD centre”, 17 November 2015).

“The Nantes Early Childhood Development Centre is in the final stages of completion,” confirms the City’s Mayco member for social development and early childhood development, Suzette Little.

“The contractor is still on site, working through a ‘snag list’ including additional storm water drainage, lights and painting. The building is scheduled for handover to the City by the end of July.”

The ECD centre, which will be the first of three built across the City, has exceeded expectations even before it has been completed. “This project has been very successful as the social development and early childhood development directorate was able to increase the building footprint to cater for more children than originally planned. In spite of this extension, the project was still within budget and the scope of works,” she adds.

Little says part of the finishing touches was for the City to follow through and complete the processes for the appointment of an operator to lease the premises from the City.
