Robbers shot during house break-in

A robber was killed during an armed robbery at a house in Kenwyn on Wednesday.

His accomplice is in hospital in a critical condition after getting shot during the robbery.

Lansdowne police spokesperson Sergeant Nkululeko Mnyaka says the robbery occurred in Rockford Road at about 22:00.

“According to the [daughter], she came home with her mother and as they were busy parking the car two unknown men approached them. Both were armed and threatened to shoot them after telling them to keep quiet,” Mnyaka explains.

One of the robbers took the car keys from the daughter and forced her into the house.

“She tried to fight with the [robber] and her father – who was sleeping in the house – woke up and saw what was happening.

“Two shots were fired and one [robber] died on the scene,” Mnyaka says.

The second suspect was shot and wounded in the head. He is currently in a critical condition at Groote Schuur Hospital.

Two more robbers sped off in a red Ford Figo.

A Taurus .38 special revolver with its serial number filed off, with five ammunition rounds, was recovered from the dead robber.

The hospitalised suspect is currently under police custody facing charges of attempted murder, possession of an illegal firearm and ammunition, attempted house robbery and attempted carjacking.

At this stage it is unclear who shot the suspects, Mnyaka says.
