Run for health in fun run

Runners are invited to put their best foot forward when they participate in the Cape Cobras Central Athletics 10km challenge and 5km fun run next Sunday.

This popular race will start at Newlands Cricket Stadium on Sunday 9 April at 07:00.

According to Central Athletics club, last year’s inaugural race was an unprecedented success and exceeded all their expectations.

This year the race was granted Coca-Cola league status by Western Province Athletics (WPA). This encourages mass participation for members of all WPA-registered clubs.

Adnaan Mohamed, president of Central Athletics, says the race is an ideal opportunity to prepare for the Two Oceans half and ultramarathon on Saturday 15 April.

“Last year we had close to 4000 participants in the 10km and 5km fun run. The sport of road running has seen exceptional growth and we are expecting a field of about 5000 on the day.

“This year the Cape Cobras cricket franchise has also come on board as a partner,” says Mohamed.

He adds that every participant will be awarded medals.

“Children under 12 who finish the fun run will be awarded vouchers courtesy of Rodeo Spur in Claremont. Polar ice cream will also be handing out free ice lollies at the finish,” Mohamed says.

Central Athletics is a community club established in 2014 by a few like-minded individuals who have more than 40 years of running experience between them.

“The idea is to provide a home for people who want to improve their lifestyles and increase their fitness levels by following a running programme with the emphasis on enjoyment. The race can be seen as a way of assisting the development as well as maintaining a healthy lifestyle,” says Mohamed.

Free secure parking will be available at Groote Schuur High School.

You can enter the race at www.topevents.co.za before the end of Saturday. In-store entries will also be taken at the Sweat Shop in Claremont. Entries will also be taken at Groote Schuur High School on the day from 04:45 to 06:45.

Registration will take place at Groote Schuur High School next Friday (7 April) from 14:00 to 19:00 and on race day from 04:45 to 06:45.
