Safety initiative gathers speed

2016-04-19 06:00

The Sea Point, Fresnaye and Bantry Bay Ratepayers’ Association (SFB) plans to acquire a rapid response vehicle to supplement its crime and grime initiative.

The initiative is in its first phase, with segway patrols launched in November last year. The first phase of the project covers Beach Road from Three Anchor Bay to Saunders, including the Promenade and London and Marais roads.

The association needs to sign up another 25 flat blocks, with 1411 apartments in them, before commencing the next phase. This was announced at the SFB annual meeting on Wednesday 13 April.

It is anticipated that phase two will start by the end of the year, says project co-ordinator Marco van Embden.

Once another 800 flats – making up 90% of the properties – sign up, the association will be able to acquire the vehicle, he says.

The vehicle is necessary to supplement the segways and to provide overview patrols of the area, as well as provide a rapid response to incidents, says Van Embden.

Security patrols 24 hours a day (Streets now patrolled 24 hours, People’s Post, 15 December) increase security presence at critical times, says the association’s coordinator, Toni van Eyssen.

A fieldworker, Jantjies Booysen, has also been appointed to complement the safety patrols, with his salary funded by SFB and the Mouille Point Ratepayers’ Association.

He profiles the homeless in the area, addresses hotspots and assists homeless to access shelters. Booysen has successfully relocated three street people since the start of the year, says Van Embden.
