An 18-year-old boy from Gugulethu is still missing after reportedly being swept out to sea while swimming with his friends at Mnandi beach yesterday (5 November). His three friends were rescued from the surf by lifeguards.

The NSRI said in a statement various search and rescue teams, including the NSRI, Cape Town Fire and Rescue Services, Metro Police and police, responded to reports of a “mass drowning” at Mnandi beach at around 16:40.

One of the three teenagers rescued by lifeguards, a 15-year-old boy, was treated by Fire and Rescue Services paramedics for hypothermia and non-fatal drowning symptoms. He was transported to hospital in a stable condition for observation for secondary drowning.

An extensive sea and shore search revealed no sign of the other teenager.

In a separate incident the NSRI Strandfontein responded to reports of a drowning in progress at Monwabisi Beach, in the vicinity of the off-shore tidal pool, at around 18:15.

An extensive sea, shore and air search revealed no sign of a 30-year-old man, missing in the water after reportedly being swept out to sea by rip-currents.

Despite an extensive search no sign of the missing man could be found.

Following the Monwabisi search the EMS/AMS Skymed rescue helicopter then assisted in an aerial search for the missing teenager at Mnandi Beach.

A police dive unit had been alerted and they will continue an ongoing search for both the missing man and teenager at Mnandi and Monwabisi beaches.

Police have opened investigations into both incidents. Police and Law Enforcement are assisting family of the missing teenager from the Mnandi Beach incident.
