Security guards nab burglary suspects in getaway car

A 23-year-old man was arrested on Friday 28 August for housebreaking and possession of stolen items.

Rondebosch police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Lyndon Sisam says police were called to the scene by the Fidelity security company after they caught a man driving away with a plasma TV, laptop, clothing and jewellery.

According to the report the suspect was cornered by the security company at Avenue de Mist. He had allegedly broken into a house in Moolenburg Road at 15:00.

Sisam says the allegedly stolen items were recovered from the suspect’s vehicle. “On police arrival at the scene [security guards] handed over the driver of the gold Toyota Avanza. The suspect was taken to Rondebosch Police Station where the property was identified by the owner,” he says.

Jade Hanning, district manager of Fidelity ADT, says the monitoring centre received alarm activation from a home in the area and dispatched an armed response vehicle. “When the vehicle approached the client’s address, the officer noticed a vehicle speeding away from the address and a person running out after the vehicle and pointing at it. He immediately pursued what appeared to be the getaway vehicle while he requested our monitoring centre to dispatch another vehicle to assist him.

“The two armed response vehicles soon managed to corner the alleged getaway car on Avenue de Mist and forced it to come to a stop. The vehicle’s two occupants immediately tried to run away, but the driver was apprehended.

“Our officers searched the car and found a plasma TV, laptop and various other items that were allegedly stolen earlier,” says Hanning.

He advised the residents to regularly test their home security systems twice a year to make sure they are working properly and that any alarm signal is received by the monitoring centre.

The owner of the house says no one was at home at the time of the incident.

“My neighbour saw suspicious activity on my property and raised the alarm, and also called me to tell me what was happening. It seems that the suspects gained access to the property by forcing open a double-door on the side of the house.”
