‘Security risk’ land soon to be closed off

A portion of land in Ottery will soon be leased to a resident after a decision to have the land leased was supported by the Rondevlei Subcouncil on Tuesday 14 June.

Erf 1074, on the corners of Ottery and Thiele roads, will now be leased to Rokayda van der Westhuizen to ensure her property is secured.

No objections were received and ward councillor Melanie Arendse echoed that Van der Westhuizen complained about safety and security concerns due to the open field adjacent to her home.

“An application was received from Van der Westhuizen for the lease of the land for security purposes. (She) reported that she feels unsafe as taxis and cars use the open piece of land adjacent to her home as a drive-through. As she is a widow and living alone she feels if the subject land is closed off it will give her a greater sense of security,” the motivation reads.

The land will be leased to Van der Westhuizen at an annual tariff, City land will be better utilised and the leasing of the land will relieve council of the burden of the maintenance of the land, the motivation read.

A resident who lives near the residence in Thiele Road, who did not want to be named out of fear of reprisal, says he has seen how the open land is used as a shortcut for cars and taxis.

“I’m glad to hear Van der Westhuizen applied to have the piece of land put in her name so she can have it closed up. It definitely will be a lot more safer for her and the road users will be forced to comply with traffic regulations,” he says.
