The recent winner of the Telkom Knockout Cup in the Premier Soccer League (PSL), Cape Town City Football Club, is partnering with taxis in the peninsula to win the hearts of soccer fans.

On Saturday the club launched an initiative at the Mowbray interchange where taxi drivers apply for a loyalty card that gives them special treatment for home games at Cape Town Stadium.

Julian Bailey, spokesperson of the club, explains that the name Cape Town City still has a place in the hearts of many soccer lovers in the Cape.

“We might be the new boys on the scene but there’s a legacy of the name that we have to uphold,” he says.

“Our success in the Telkom Cup meant that there is a lot of interest in the club and part of our aim to build up our support base is to find ways to make it easier, and safer, for our fans to attend matches.”

He adds that this loyalty card gives drivers an opportunity to buy ten tickets at a reduced price and get two free.

“With this offer he can then sell those tickets and the price includes their transport to and from the game in safety. There is also special a parking allocation for members as an added bonus.”

Attie Davids, chairperson of the Mowbray Taxi Association, says they are happy that the club chose their rank to launch the project.

“We operate to all areas, including the northern suburbs like Elsies River, Bishop Lavis, Bellville and Ravensmead,” he says.

“Soccer lovers are always looking for transport to matches and we see the need to provide this service. Now for the nominal fee of R20 for the season you can get the card that gives you these special privileges and you can enjoy the game in peace, knowing that your safety and transport are assured.”
