Site for Masi firestation

2015-12-08 06:00

Land on Kommetjie Road has been earmarked for the development of a new firestation to serve Masiphumelele.

The plot is diagonally opposite the entrance to Masiphumelele, says JP Smith, mayoral committee member for safety and security.

“The location of the firestation will allow for a quicker response time to fires within the area, which includes Masiphumelele.”

Construction is expected to begin towards the end of next year, Smith says, and is estimated to cost R12m.

Two people died in a recent fire in Masiphumelele which destroyed over 1000 homes and left more than 4000 residents destitute (“Two killed in Masi fire”, People’s Post, 1 December). It was the worst of several fires to have affected the community in the last year.

The new road to Masiphumelele is expected to open by the middle of next year and will boost the response time of emergency services. This as Houmoed Avenue is being extended in a R19m project to link Kommetjie Road to the cul de sac in Masiphumelele, explains Brett Herron, mayoral committee member for transport (“Extra road to home, job”, People’s Post, 13 October).

In the meantime, the Fish Hoek, Simon’s Town and Lakeside firestations will still provide fire cover for the area.

“Funding for this project has been made available over the next three financial years, which includes the current financial year,” says Smith.
