Stanturf Football Club, formed 25 years ago in the heart of the Rocklands, previously known as Turf United and Stanton FC, is looking forward to this year’s Kenpark u.23 tournament, which takes place this weekend.

A total of 24 teams from across the city, including defending champions Glendene United, will take to Kenpark United’s fields in Mitchell’s Plain to showcase their rising talent.
According to Stanturf’s u.23 coach, Jeanne Valentyn, his charges are excited at the prospect of rubbing shoulders with some of the city’s more renowned clubs, after qualifying for this year’s tournament after a 16-year absence.

Valentyn attributes the barren period to a number of factors, which ended in their club losing the bulk of their youth players over the years.
“With many ups and downs in the club as well as the community, we still had the game of football at heart. As a former junior player (myself), it was then a joy to play and as time went past our community, (others) became invested with gangsters and the use of drugs increased, especially within the youth. We ended up losing players as well as a loss of interest in the game.

Keeping the youth motivated and interested in the game was hard and as an amateur club, finding attacking players was difficult,” he states.
He says that the only other way to lure talent back to the club was to enter in well-known tournaments which may provide a gateway onto a bigger platform, where a player may have the opportunity of plying their trade professionally. “The players are excited, preparing to showcase their talent and hopefully impress to possibly fulfil their dreams and make it in this industry.
“We recently partnered up with a local Mitchell’s Plain business that has now assisted us with a sponsor, so that we can also look the part.”

The team held a kit launch with their sponsor on Thursday 9 June, which brought a renewed spark to the squad ahead of the tournament proper this weekend.
“Just to see the faces of our boys, excited to receive a small gift, this could not have been possible if we did not engage in this venture.”
