Frank Solomon from Hout Bay is not only a pro surfer – he is also a movie star.

The 33-year-old started surfing when he was just a little boy and has never looked back.

He was taught by his father.

“I push myself all the time. Ever since I saw taught I made it a point that I go for the big waves and enjoy it each time I do it,” he says.

He got a message from a friend about how life was when he was travelling overseas.

“His idea was that I lived a good life, but he didn’t know what exactly I went through to make ends meet,” says Solomon.

His movie, Let’s be Frank, will premiere next month on Monday 19 September.

The movie will depict what life is like as a surfer.

“People have this perception that things are all nice and comfy, especially when we travel. That’s not it,” says Solomon.

The idea of making the movie came about when he was with a friend in a bar.

“My friend said I must be enjoying travelling and staying in expensive hotels. I told him that was not it, especially when you’re starting, things can be very difficult. When I started I had to sleep on people’s couches and I had to work different jobs so that I could survive overseas. He thought that was amazing and didn’t look at it that way, so we decided we should do a movie about the reality of it. That’s how it kicked off,” he says.

Solomon says the idea took him by surprise.

“I never thought that one day I would be in a movie or there would be a movie about my life. So for the last couple of years I have been concentrating more on the movie and we had to do a lot of travelling as it was shot in different countries. It was really cool and I enjoyed shooting the movie so much. We hope it will paint a real picture,” he says.

He is glad that he has found sponsors and things are a lot better.

“I really enjoy what I do, but in the beginning it was such a bumpy road.

“With the help of sponsors things have changed for the best. In the next month I will be travelling a lot as the movie will premiere. I believe it’s something people will enjoy a lot.”
