Residents of Roseland Road in Rondebosch got together for their annual street party and raised funds for a local school at the same time.

In doing so the residents will help Vista Nova School add to its play equipment.

It is a public special school for children with learning barriers. The school serves over 400 children from three years to 19 and Grade 12.

A resident read about the school’s new wheelchair swing in People’s Post (“Swing is a game changer”, 20 October) and thought it was a good idea to raise money and help the school buy more play equipment.

This was done through the Roseland Road neighbourhood street party which they held for the sixth year.

On the night of the street party they collected R3300, which was handed over to Sandi Wells from the Friends of the Vista Nova, the school’s fundraising arm.

One of the residents, Mark Abrahams, says they are really happy that they could help the school.

“When I saw the article I just thought we had to do something for the school. After all, the school is just a few streets away from us. Instead of just getting together as neighbours, we decided to do something that will change other people’s lives. We are privileged to live in this community,” he says.

Abrahams adds that it’s important for neighbours to get out together once in a while to meet and greet.

“People tend to live in their own spaces. It’s important to come out and know your neighbours. A lot of people are often away and if you have a good relationship with your neighbours you know that you have someone watching over your house whilst you are away and that gives some sense of ease and comfort.

“We are really happy that since we started doing the street party we have seen other people do it as well in their areas. We are glad that we could help the school and we are looking forward to a bigger project next year when we do the street party again.”

Wells says they are happy with the money that they received and are planning to expand the play area.

“We haven’t decided what exactly we will be adding, whether a merry-go-round or another wheelchair swing, but what makes us happy is that with the equipment kids are able to play together. It’s so fantastic that everyone is included during play time and they help each other.”
