The nephew of struggle hero Dullah Omar was killed in a hijacking on Thursday (10 August) night.

Police have confirmed reports of the shooting death of Shaheed Omar (38), nephew of the late struggle stalwart and former Minister of Justice, during an apparent hijacking which took place on the corner of Jakes Gerwel Drive and Jan Smuts Road in Lansdowne at about 20:30.

According to News24, provincial police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk confirms Omar was shot in the chest by an unknown male and died on the scene. A case of murder is currently under investigation.

The death comes at a time of intense media coverage on the Omar family after they issued a statement calling on the ANC to avoid using Dullah Omar’s name in public drives in support of President Jacob Zuma. The statement written by Dullah Omar's wife, Farida, and other members of the family clarifies their disappointment in the president.

An excerpt from the family’s statement reads: "Just as it does his family, it would have troubled and hurt him (Dullah) deeply that his name be associated with anything but the defence and advancement of the founding values of the ANC and the principles of our Constitutional democracy. Both of which he cherished, lived and worked for so hard.”

The family has written to the ANC's national executive to request that it removes Dullah Omar's name from the ANC Cape Town metro region in the Western Cape with immediate effect. It further asks that Omar's name be dissociated from (the) planned march and that “the ANC be rebuilt on the principles, values and practices by which Dullah Omar and countless others lived their lives".

Shaheed Omar will be laid to rest according to Islamic rites on Friday 11 August. The funeral commences at 15:30 from 31 Mabel Road, Rylands Estate, immediately proceeding to the Mountview Masjid and the Pooke Road Cemetery.

For more information on the funeral, contact the family on 021 637 1825.
