Swartklip Netball Union hosted a beauty pageant last week to show off the beauty of the youth of the area.

The union was established to make professional netball accessible to the youth living in walking distance. For a long time children from the west of Mitchell’s Plain were excluded from the other clubs because they lived too far away in Beacon Valley, Eastridge and Tafelsig.

The newly established union – launched in November last year and constituted in January this year – has 12 affiliated clubs.

“We celebrate our youth in sports and especially during the month of August when we celebrate young girls and women,” says ward councillor Solomon Philander.

“[The] Western Cape was shaken by the many deaths of children through violence by perpetrators who were well known to them.

“As Swartklip netball union we say ‘No’ to the abuse of children. In our activities we are able to be a support structure and are able to keep the children out of danger with activities offered to the children and youth.”

The beauty pageant had two categories.

Miss Swartklip Teen was won by Courtney Coetzee. Zukirah Bengemen was crowned first princess and Shenique Kordom second princess. Fatiema Kamalie was awarded Miss Personality.

In the Miss Swartklip Junior category Shireen Hendricks was crowned the winner. Cliché Hartzenberg was awarded as first princess and Miche Snyders as second princess.

Kelly May was crowned Miss Personality and Tarren May won Best Dressed.
