Sunday nights at Swingers in Wetton have become the place to be with the supper club giving music lovers more than tasty treats.

This initiative has seen the “reunion” of the group Out of Town who are the core band for the evening, featured with some special guests every week.

Keyboard man Camillo Lombard, an integral part of the band, has grown into one of the giants in the music industry. But this is the band that started him on the path to really finding his feet in the music business.

“When I started with Out of Town in 1991, I was wet behind the ears where the music industry was concerned,” he remembers.

“Being the youngest in the band was an experience I will never forget. Bassist Lionel Beukes was the leader who arranged all the rehearsals and gigs. He left a huge impression on me in the professional way in which he conducted himself.

“Where the music was concerned he expanded my musical diet by introducing me to artists like Keith Jarret, Jeff Lorber, Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, Joe Sample, Abdullah Ibrahim, Mcoy Tyner, Yellow Jackets, Koinonia, Mezzo Forté, Spyro Gyra and many other artists, allowing me to emulate their solos and learn the art of improvisation.”

Another member of the band that impressed the young musician was legendary drummer Denver Furness. “He is also known as the “Fiery” Furness and his prowess on the drums influenced and strengthened my sense of rhythm and tempo.”

Camillo also explained how the experience taught him the value of versatility. “We became the backing band of choice for so many of the big names because we could add to the gig with our backing vocal talents. Those years we backed people like Leslie Kleinsmith, Robbie Jansen, Terry Fortune, Vernon Castle, Sandra Butler and many more at venues like Club Montreal, Baker Street, Midnight Moves, Rosie’s & all that Jazz and the The Green Dolphin”

Being back with the band for the Sunday sessions in Wetton has seen some changes with his role in the group. “Being reunited with the guys now after 20 years, has been a bit of a paradigm shift,” he reflects. “I have since been equipping myself with skills and have become musical director to many South African and international artists. So these days I find myself in the drivers seat, giving guidance and advice to the rest of the band. There is definitely much love among the members and we simply love sharing the stage together.” V Admission is free for the Sunday Night Supper Session. Doors open at 18:30. Info and booking from 021 762 2443.
