Take care of diabetes

2017-03-21 06:03

With the month of Ramadan starting in May the Life Kingsbury Hospital in Claremont is raising awareness for people living with diabetes during the fast.

Dee Dee Ferguson, diabetes nurse educator of the Diabetes Life Clinic at Life Kingsbury Hospital, explains that fasting during Ramadan for people with diabetes is an important personal choice that needs careful management.

“This includes understanding the risks of fasting during this holy month, what happens to the body during fasting and complications associated with fasting,” she says.

“It is always advisable to have a pre-Ramadan medical assessment.

This should should be done well in advance (two months is the universal guideline) in order to take appropriate dietary, medical and exercise regimes into consideration, Ferguson explains.

The clinic will be hosting a Ramadan support group meeting on Tuesday 28 March to help people with their diabetes control during the fast.

The meeting will be held in the auditorium on the first floor of the Kingsbury medical suites in Wilderness Road, Claremont at 17:00.

Tickets cost R60 and there are only 100 seats, so booking is essential, adds Ferguson.
