Teen (14) arrested after firing at police

2015-12-01 06:00

A total of 156 people have been arrested for drug-related crimes throughout the Nyanga policing cluster in the last week following various operations.

The operations, under the command of Brigadier Phumzile Ceytana, included the assistance of the Bishop Lavis, Elsies River, Gugulethu, Manenberg, Nyanga and Phillipi East policing precincts. The six commanders of these police stations oversaw and executed many focus-driven operations.

Lieutenant Ian Bennett, spokesperson for Manenberg police, says the arrests are a result of conducting searches on 50 known drug houses in an effort to combat gang activity and the abuse of drugs.

Six men were also arrested and charged with the possession of nine illegal firearms and ammunition.

A 14-year-old boy from Elsies River was arrested for having an unlicenced firearm. He was also charged with the attempted murder of police officers after firing several shots at them when he was cornered before his arrest.

“The attacks on our members will not be tolerated,” says Bennett. “Anyone that sees fit to attack police members will face the full might of the law.”

The 14-year-old suspect has been released on bail for other attempted murder charges.

“The concern for the cluster commander and his senior management is the number of crimes committed towards women and children,” says Bennett.

A total of 60 such cases were reported with 29 people arrested.

Police have encouraged the community to play a more active role in the safety of women and children, as most of the crimes being committed against them are taking place in their own homes.

45 shebeen operations were conducted with 11 arrests made and 340F alcohol confiscated.

“We will continue to encourage the community to report any criminal activity and any information that leads to the successful confiscation and prosecution of any illegal firearms will be rewarded financially,” says Bennett.
