Manenberg police have yielded great results in the past week after 10 successful arrests in three separate cases.

Manenberg police spokesperson Captain Ian Bennett says on Tuesday 21 June three men were arrested in connection with a robbery and kidnapping case earlier the same day. “Three men, aged between 19 and 28, were arrested after intensive investigation by Detective Constable Darryl Van Noie,” Bennett explains.

The case was reported by a 28-year-old woman who was robbed and almost kidnapped by the suspects while on her way to take public transport in the Vanguard Estate area.

“She managed to fight them off and they fled the scene with her personal belongings. Van Noie received the case and found that the description of the vehicle has already been reported as a vehicle used in committing robberies,” Bennett says.

After making enquiries and collecting information, Bennett says the detective made a breakthrough in the case on the same day.

“He received information that a vehicle fitting the description was parked at an address in Manenberg. When he found the vehicle, it matched the description and that of all the other incidents. Van Noie found the victim’s possessions in the vehicle as well, which included her cell phone,” Bennett says.

He adds it was also found that the 28-year-old suspect was also wanted for several other cases, including hijacking, and he was out on bail for the illegal possession of a firearm.

“He is also wanted on a theft of motor vehicle case in Mitchell’s Plain and armed robbery on a Manenberg case,” says Bennett.

The suspects were arrested and charged. They appeared in the Athlone Magistrate’s Court.

“Anyone who experienced any such incident is asked to come forward and contact Van Noie on 021 699 9400, so that he could complete his investigation and build a strong case against these perpetrators,” Bennett urges.

In a non-related incident, six suspects were arrested for the possession of tik, estimated at a street value of about R10 000.

The six men, between the ages 30 and 47, were arrested on Wednesday 22 June while police were conducting high density crime prevention patrols.

“Members received information of drug dealing in Thames Avenue, Manenberg. The crime prevention unit went straight to the address and gained access to the premises. The information led them to a Wendy house at the back of the main house.

“They found the six males in the shed where two were packaging the tik into smaller packets,” Bennett confirms.

Bennett says the brazen culprits tried to throw the tik away, but they were caught.

“They tried throwing the contraband through the window, but they were caught red-handed. Altogether 38 packets of tik were already packed and a large amount of uncut tik was confiscated, valued at R10 000. The six males were arrested and appeared in the Athlone Magistrate’s Court,” he says.

On Thursday 23 June police also arrested another suspect for the possession of and dealing in tik and dagga.

“The crime prevention unit was doing patrols when they received information regarding a suspicious person dealing in drugs at an address in Winterberg Crescent, Heideveld. The members went to the address where they found a 40-year-old man in a Wendy house at the back of the main house,” Bennett says.

On searching him they found 25 packets of tik, 16 sticks of dagga and a half mandrax tablet.

The suspect was arrested and appeared in the Athlone Court on charges of possession and dealing in drugs.
