Three people have died and four others were injured in a collision between five cars on the M3 near Tokai.

Maxime Jordaan, City of Cape traffic services spokesperson, says the M3 southbound is closed at Ladies Mile, just after Tokai.

She says police officers were in pursuit of a suspicious vehicle which then collided with another car.

According to some reports the occupants of the suspicious vehicle was members of a crowbar gang.

Kirstenhof police spokesperson, sergeant Deidre Solomon confirmed the accident. “The car was chased from Diep River and it drove on the M3. Due to the road works on the road to town, they drove on the island, then hit an object and they ended up in the oncoming traffic. One car flipped  and three of the suspects died on the scene. The other person was transported to hospital in a serious condition. Other people injured on scene where rushed to hospital for treatment.

"Though there were instruments related to crowbars found on the scene, it can’t be confirmed yet that the suspects were members of any crowbar gang,” she says.

Traffic spokesperson Richard Coleman confirmed two of the injured are in a serious condition.

The M3 southbound was still closed today at 15:00.

Motorists are advised to use alternative routes.
