Traffic lights for safety

Pupil safety at Kommetjie Primary will be given a boost when a traffic light is installed at a pedestrian crossing in front of the school early next year.

This comes after years of lobbying by parents to slow traffic passing the school.

Johann Kikillus, chairperson of Kommetjie Primary School Governing Body, says the intersection has become dangerous .

“I have been lobbying for a light for about two years, with others lobbying before me. A light will make a huge difference,” he says.

“Every day, dozens of children attempt to cross this intersection and after school hours, and particularly on weekends, many people cross this road to get to the beach. It is currently very dangerous to cross the zebra crossing as vehicles, especially taxis, do not stop for the pupils.”

Mayoral committee member for transport, Brett Herron, confirmed the requests for traffic calming have been received.

“Transport for Cape Town recommended the implementation of a traffic signal controlled pedestrian crossing due to vulnerable pedestrians crossing Kommetjie Main Road daily to and from the school and because the potential for vehicle pedestrian conflict is high,” he says.

“If all goes according to plan, the traffic signal controlled pedestrian crossing will be commissioned by February 2016. We do not anticipate significant delays.”
