Another train was set alight at Retreat station last Wednesday.

Ward councillor Kevin Southgate says this is the third time that a train has been set alight. He believes this happened because of the easy access.

Southgate alleges that Prasa officials are prepared to suffer millions of rands in damages instead of erecting a fence that will cost them a few thousand.

He says residents near the station have been calling for a fence but their calls fall on deaf ears.

Metrorail confirms that it was reported at about 20:15 that train 2501, operating between Cape Town and Retreat, was on fire at Retreat station.

Daphne Kayster, acting Metrorail spokesperson, says fire services responded quickly and the fire was doused at 22:30.

“One motor coach was completely gutted, and a plain trailer partially damaged.

“Fortunately there were no injuries. The effects of the fire incident include additional morning peak trips cancelled on the southern line and Cape Flats line. The impact on further services has not been determined.

“It is too early to speculate on the cause of the fire incident. Our investigation into the cause of the incident is currently underway,” says Kayster.
