The Friends of Valkenberg Trust, together with staff at Valkenberg psychiatric hospital, hosted a successful annual golf day last Saturday at Rondebosch Golf Club to raise funds to help patients suffering from mental illness.

Sandra Matthew, director of the organisation, says the fundraising event was aimed at helping to promote the recovery of people with serious mental illnesses at the hospital in Observatory as part of celebrating mental health day.

She says the Friends of Valkenberg Trust staff, together with a group of 60 volunteers, help people with mental illnesses get back on their feet by partnering with the hospital to offer complementary services and activities which target each aspect of the recovery process by teaching patients independent living skills, building self-esteem, improving physical activity, teaching work skills and providing practical support to make recovery possible.

At the golf day, one of the trust’s beneficiaries, Maxwell Mboxela, had the opportunity to hand over prizes to the tournament winners. Mboxela said he was honoured to be given the opportunity.

“I was happy to give away the prizes; it was a great opportunity for me. Their programme helps with confidence building and through it I have recovered and never been admitted to a hospital again,” said Mboxela.

He was admitted to hospital in 2006 and spent 10 months there when he was introduced to the trust. He has been receiving support and been given a job at the Friends’ tuckshop at the hospital. Mboxela is also expected to start an internship at the hospital.
