A fourth person died in hospital yesterday evening (Wednesday) following a collision between three cars on the M3 near Tokai.

Police have confirmed that all four the deceased were suspects in a burglary in Diep River, but could not confirm reports that they were members of a crowbar gang.

“Though there were instruments related to crowbars found on the scene, it can’t be confirmed yet that the suspects were members of any crowbar gang,” says Kirstenhof police spokesperson, Sergeant Deidre Solomon.

“We are still trying to determine if they were linked to any other cases,” she added

Solomon says the police were chasing the suspect’s car from Diep River when the driver apparently lost control, causing their car to roll into the oncoming traffic and collide with the other cars.

“Due to the road works on the (M3), they drove on the island, then hit an object and ended up in the oncoming traffic.”

Three other people, including a five-year-old boy, were injured in the collision. Paramedics treated the patients and provided the critically injured with advanced life support interventions.

Once treated, the patients were transported to various hospitals for urgent treatment

The incident resulted in the M3 southbound being closed causing heavy traffic delays during the afternoon peak. The scene was finally cleared five hours later.
