There were smiles all around when local volunteers from the non-profit organisation Santa Shoebox visited a farm school in the Swartland recently and handed out shoebox gifts specially made up for each child.

Shelley Finch, who lives in Claremont and works as a volunteer for the organisation, and a group of fellow volunteers visited the farm school last week and gave the children a proper Christmas party.

“Seeing the smile on each child’s face, and the accompanying whoops of glee when they open a shoebox with their name on it is such an incredible moment and I often wonder who experiences more joy – me or them,” says Shelley.

“It’s such an honour to be able to deliver the boxes that have been so lovingly made by our donors into the hands of the child it was specially made for.”

The Santa Shoebox project offers people from all walks of life the chance to participate in a profoundly valuable and personal experience that enriches both the lives of those doing the giving and those on the receiving end.

Over the past nine years, almost half a million personalised shoeboxes have been collected countrywide and handed out to children from vulnerable social backgrounds.
