Athlone A’s moved to joint top spot of the BAWP Major League after overcoming Westridge Yankees on Saturday and Bellville Tygers on Sunday in this weekend’s double-header round of fixtures.

Tyrone Brandt and Lloyd Stevens shared the pitching duties and restricted Westridge to a single run in the third innings to set up Athlone’s 2-1 win at Stephen Reagan sport grounds in Mitchell’s Plain.

Westridge will rue their missed opportunities as they left a total of 10 runners stranded on the base, five of them in the first two innings compared to Athlone’s six in total.

Westridge amassed six hits off Brandt in 5.2 innings and none off Stevens in his 3.1 innings. Athlone recorded five hits from Dean Martin in five innings and four off Jayson Ripepi in his three innings.

Westridge’s best hitter was Wesley Rushin (3 for 4) while Riyaad Moosa (3-4) and Dillian Daniels (2-4) were Athlone’s best hitters. Moosa and Daniels recorded RBI each for Athlone.

Both Moosa and Daniels were also guilty of some poor base-running options during the game.

Westridge recorded two double plays to Athlone’s one.

A’s bullpen shut out Bellville The combined effort of ex-pro baller Carl Michaels (six innings), Stevens (two innings) and rookie Lee Marks (one inning) restricted Bellville to six hits and a single base on ball without conceding a run in Athlone’s 3-0 victory on Sunday.

Athlone’s three runs were scored in the crucial seventh innings on two hits, 1 BB, 1 HBP and a sacrifice fly from Darren Wedel.

Coach Lester Smith made an inspired change when he brought on stalwart Tyrone Brandt to pinch hit for the youngster Mathew Diedericks. Brandt came up with a game-winning hit to centrefield to score brothers Riyaad and Faizel Moosa who got on base through a hit and HBP respectively.

It was, however, the Bellville bullpen that faltered. Proballer Callan Pearce gave them a good start (5 inn, 2 hits and 9 strikeouts) with Shannon Eckermans doing a 1 inning relief before the crucial seventh innings. Karl Rohm started the seventh, but only faced three batters (1BB, 1H and a HBP) before Anthony Phillips (2 Inn and 3H) finished the game.

Darren Wedel (2 for 2, 1 sacrifice fly and 1 RBI) and Brandt (1 for 1 with 2 RBIs) were Athlone’s best hitters. Kyle Ettish (2 for 3) and Jonathan Phillips (1 for 2) did best for Bellville.
